Today is Neurodiversity Day! The Neurodiversity movement was founded in 1998. The word itself was coined by Judy Singer, but is ever evolving. The word Neurodivergent, which is how autistic people identify as well, was coined by Kassiane Asasumasu, who is a BIPOC autistic. Kassiane’s blog is Radical Neurodivergence Speaking. The blog is here. Neurodiversity is not just a movement, it is also an academic concept. More can be found on Nick Walker’s site. Here is some history on Jim Sinclair, who was the founder of the Autism Rights movement, which started in the 1990s.
